What is a VPN?

A VPN (virtual private network) is an encrypted connection between your device and a server run by a VPN provider. All of your internet traffic travels inside that encrypted tunnel, so the networks it crosses — your ISP, a hotel's Wi-Fi, an airport hotspot — can't read it, and the websites you visit see the VPN server's IP address instead of yours.

In practice that means three things: your browsing stays private from whoever runs the network you're on, your real IP address and location are hidden from the sites and apps you use, and services that pick their catalog or pricing based on your location see the country you chose instead. "I have nothing to hide" usually means "I haven't seen the logs." Here is what different parties can observe about an unprotected connection — none of it hypothetical, all of it routine.

Your ISP sees every domain you visit and when, via your DNS lookups and connection metadata — and in many countries it must retain that history for months or years, and may legally sell aggregated forms of it to advertisers. The operator of any Wi-Fi network you join — the café, the hotel, the airport, whoever set up the router — sees the same, plus device names and unencrypted traffic.
